The Encounter of Ceramics and Contemporary Art

As an artist I see the world in a distinctive way.  When I travel and explore the world, I cannot help but make connections.  Nature is one place that I look for these connections. Interestingly, the word nature has multiple definitions, ranging from a person’s inherent character to an organ’s function and to the flora and fauna found in the landscape. The ambiguities I find in nature give me much inspiration to draw from. There are unlimited variations of what can seem to be rather mundane objects.

With the Piante series, I am combining the organic shapes to create unique forms with a broader vocabulary.  I scan natural objects such as fruits, vegetables, seedpods, etc. The scans are then 3D printed in plastic models used to make plaster molds for slip casting in porcelain.

I often consider how my ceramic works fit into the broader world of contemporary art.  Certainly, the still life remains a vibrant genre even today.  It has been interpreted in many ways. It speaks to our relationship with objects through the lens of  society and its culture. It implies a system in first choosing then arranging objects for a unified form.  These recent  works of mine can be connected to the ready-made, the use of found objects and mixed media  found in the works of such artists as Kiki Smith, Marcel Duchamp and Mario Merz.

Taking natural objects and using them in a digital form creates a juxtaposition that I find interesting. The work evokes the vessel, but hopefully begins to transform it in the mind of the viewer to a more organic form that suggests relationships and often takes on the genre of the still life.
